Jongmyo is the royal shrine of the Joseon dynasty, first established in 1395 after King Taejo Yi Seong-gye founded the dynasty. The main hall (Jeongjeon) was constructed first, enshrining the spirit tablets of Taejo¡¯s four generations of ancestors—Mokjo, Ikjo, Dojo, and Hwanjo. Jeongjeon, the central building of Jongmyo where the spirit tablets of successive kings and queens are kept, is 19 bays wide and 101 meters long, making it the longest single-story wooden structure in the world.
Yeongnyeongjeon, a separate hall for additional spirit tablets, was built in 1921. The architecture of Jongmyo is simple yet solemn, giving it exceptional aesthetic beauty. A five-year restoration project was completed on July 5, 2025.
